Master the Art of Recall: The Initial Letter Technique
Ever feel like your brain is a sieve when you’re trying to memorize Scripture? You read a verse ten times, close the book, and—poof—it’s gone.
At Bible Memory Bros, we’re all about working smarter, not harder. Today, we’re breaking down one of the most effective "brain hacks" in the business: The Initial Letter Technique.
What is the Initial Letter Technique?
The concept is simple: you take a verse and condense it down to just the first letter of every word. By looking at these letters, you provide your brain with a "hook" to hang the word on without giving away the whole answer. It forces your mind to actively recall the text rather than just passively reading it. It’s the difference between looking at a map and actually driving the route.
Why We Use the KJV
You’ll notice we primarily use the King James Version (KJV). Not only is the language majestic and rhythmic (which actually helps with memory!), but it’s also the most accessible. Almost every Bible memory app offers the KJV for free, making it the perfect "universal" version for our community.
The "Easiest Bible Memory" Challenge
To get you started, we’ve launched the Easiest Bible Memory challenge. We believe everyone can memorize Scripture, so we start with the absolute basics to prove the technique works.
The first verse in this challenge is John 11:35—famous for being the shortest verse in the Bible.
The Verse: "Jesus wept."
The Initial Letter Key:
J W
How to do it:
Read: Read the full verse aloud three times.
Code: Look only at the letters J W.
Recall: Say the full words while looking at the letters.
Visualize: Close your eyes and see the J and the W in your mind.
It seems almost too easy, right? But that’s the point. By starting with a two-word verse, you’re training your brain to associate a single letter with a specific word without the stress of a long passage.

Scaling Up
When you move on to powerhouse verses, a string of letters like F G s l t w (For God so loved the world) acts like a scaffolding. It holds the structure of the sentence in place while you fill in the blanks. Once you master the "J W" of John 11:35, you've already learned the mechanics for memorizing entire chapters.
The Bible Memory Bros Challenge: Take a verse you’ve been struggling with today. Write out just the first letter of each word on a sticky note and put it on your mirror. You’ll be surprised how quickly those letters turn back into the Living Word.
