Ever notice how you can eat an entire pizza and still be hungry three hours later?

That’s how physical food works. It meets a physical need, and then the need comes right back. You can’t eat enough on Monday to carry you through Friday. But Jesus talked about a completely different kind of bread, one that meets a hunger no pizza can reach.

In John 6, Jesus says it plainly:

"I am that bread of life." — John 6:48 (KJV)

So what does He mean? Is He talking about actual food, or is this a metaphor?

Jesus Explains Himself

The crowd listening to Jesus that day had the same question, and a lot of them took Him in a strictly physical way. So a few verses later, Jesus clears it up:

"It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life." — John 6:63 (KJV)

“Quickeneth” means “makes alive.” Jesus is saying that life comes from the Spirit, not from the flesh. He isn’t talking about carb-loading. The words He speaks are spirit and life.

Earlier in the same chapter, He tells us how we receive this bread:

"I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst." — John 6:35 (KJV)

We don’t feed on Christ with our teeth. We feed on Him by coming to Him and believing on Him, and His words are how we come to know Him.

Bread That Fades vs. Bread That Lasts

Jesus reminded the crowd about the manna their ancestors ate in the wilderness:

"Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead." — John 6:49 (KJV)

Even bread sent straight from heaven couldn’t keep anybody alive forever. Physical food fades. But Christ, and the words He speaks, bring eternal life. This is the same truth Jesus used against the devil in the wilderness:

"Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." — Matthew 4:4 (KJV)

Just as bread feeds your body, Christ’s words feed your spirit.

Feeling Empty?

If you’re feeling drained, stressed, or spiritually empty, the answer isn’t another scroll, another snack, or another distraction. Stop trying to fill a spiritual hunger with physical things.

When many people walked away from Jesus after this teaching, Peter gave the answer we all need to hold onto:

"Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life." — John 6:68 (KJV)

Get into the Word today —

feed your spirit.
