When you’re stuck in the middle of a difficult season, hearing that trial builds “hope” can feel completely disconnected from reality. Stress, uncertainty, and pressure rarely feel hopeful in the moment. Yet Romans 5:4 lays out a clear progression:

"And patience, experience; and experience, hope." — Romans 5:4 (KJV)
"And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience." — Romans 5:3 (KJV)

So how does real-life experience actually lead to hope instead of just exhaustion?

It comes down to building a track record.

The Shepherd’s Track Record

Consider 1 Samuel 17, when young David offered to fight Goliath. To everyone watching, David was completely outmatched, a teenager with no formal armor standing before a seasoned warrior. King Saul and the Israelite army saw an impossible giant.

David saw something else entirely because he was looking through the lens of his past experiences.

When explaining why he was ready to step into the valley, David didn’t brag about his skill or talk himself up with fake confidence. He pointed directly to his history in the fields:

"Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God." — 1 Samuel 17:36 (KJV)
"David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine." — 1 Samuel 17:37 (KJV)

Before David ever faced a giant on a public stage, he faced a lion and a bear in private. He had already seen God deliver him in life-or-death situations. He wasn’t relying on wishful thinking; he had proof.

Hope Is Anchored in Proof

Biblical hope isn’t optimism or hoping things just magically work out. It is a grounded, confident expectation anchored in evidence.

When a new challenge hits, your initial reaction is often determined by where you place your focus:

David understood that the same God who protected him in the pasture was the God who would sustain him in the valley. His past victories became the fuel for his present courage.

Facing Your Current Giant

Whatever obstacle you are standing in front of today, don’t let its size cause you to forget your history.

Take time to look back at the moments where you received unexpected strength, endurance, or provision. Every trial you have survived is evidence that you don’t go into the next battle empty-handed.

Experience turns past faithfulness into future hope —

one victory at a time.
