Jesus Is Not Soft: The King in Psalm 45 and Revelation

Scroll through Christian content lately and you will find a lot of soft Jesus. Gentle Jesus. Harmless Jesus. A baby in a manger forever, never a King on a throne.

People love picturing Him as agreeable and never confrontational. A Jesus you can add to your life without changing anything.

But if the only Jesus you know is soft spoken and easy to ignore, you have not met the real one.

A Sword Strapped to His Side

Psalm 45 describes the King with a sword on His thigh:

"Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O most mighty, with thy glory and thy majesty." — Psalm 45:3 (KJV)

We know this psalm is about Christ because Hebrews quotes it about Him:

"But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom." — Hebrews 1:8 (KJV), quoting Psalm 45:6

That is not the Jesus getting portrayed in a lot of shows and movies right now.

Eyes Like a Flame of Fire

When John saw the risen Christ in Revelation 1, he did not see someone soft:

"His eyes were as a flame of fire... and his voice as the sound of many waters." — Revelation 1:14–15 (KJV)

That is not soft. That is terrifying if you are not on His side.

Not a Fringe Idea

This is not a strange idea buried in one weird verse. It shows up from the Psalms to Revelation.

Psalm 2 describes the heathen raging against the LORD and against His anointed:

"Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed." — Psalm 2:1–2 (KJV)

And the answer to that rage?

"Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel." — Psalm 2:9 (KJV)

Psalm 110 says it just as plainly:

"The Lord at thy right hand shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath." — Psalm 110:5 (KJV)

Enemies Made a Footstool

Jesus Himself pointed to this truth in Luke 20, quoting David:

"The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, Till I make thine enemies thy footstool." — Luke 20:42–43 (KJV)

God the Father is going to make Christ’s enemies His footstool. Not His friends. His footstool.

When the Mighty Beg the Mountains

Revelation 6 shows what happens when the powerful of this world finally face Him:

"And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men... said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb." — Revelation 6:15–16 (KJV)

Kings, captains, and mighty men would rather be buried under a mountain than face Him.

Humble Then, King Forever

He Came Humble the First TimeThe prophet said He would come “lowly, and riding upon an ass” (Zechariah 9:9), and He did.
He Is Not Staying That Way ForeverEvery knee bows to Him eventually.
