Remember Lot's Wife: Was Lot Responsible?
We often talk about Lot’s wife as a cautionary tale of a divided heart. She looked back at the smoke of Sodom and was transformed into a pillar of salt, a permanent monument to the danger of longing for a world God has called us to leave.
We look at her and see a lack of faith. But have we ever stopped to look at Lot?
The Weight of Strength
Lot was strong enough to run. He heard the angels, felt the urgency, and kept his eyes fixed on the mountains ahead. But his wife wasn’t in the same place. While Lot had the spiritual resolve to move forward, he was also the leader of a household he had led into Sodom in the first place.
This raises a challenging question for us today: Are we using our "spiritual strength" as a license for indulgence, while our brothers and sisters stumble in our wake?
The Ripple Effect of Our "Liberty"
In modern Christian life, we often justify our choices by our own ability to "handle" things. You might feel you can:
Listen to secular music without being influenced by its worldview.
Watch movies with foul language without it affecting your own speech.
Engage in certain environments without losing your focus on Christ.
But what about your "weaker" brother or sister? What about the sibling in Christ who looks to you for an example but doesn’t share your same boundaries or internal grit? When we indulge in "worldliness" because we think we’re strong enough to survive it, we often forget that we are dragging others into a fire they aren't equipped to escape.
Bearing the Infirmities of the Weak
Lot lost his wife that day. He likely spent the rest of his life wishing he had never pitched his tent toward Sodom to begin with. He underestimated how much the environment had taken root in his family’s hearts.
As the Body of Christ, we aren't just a collection of individuals; we are a family. We are responsible for one another. Scripture is clear on how we should handle this responsibility:
"We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves." — Romans 15:1
And again in Galatians 5:13:
"For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another."
Remember Lot’s Wife
Jesus told us in Luke 17:32 to "Remember Lot’s wife." Usually, we take that as a warning not to look back. But perhaps we should also take it as a warning to look around. Are we so focused on our own "freedom" that we’ve become blind to the people we are leading into temptation? Let’s follow the example of Christ, who never pleased Himself, but lived entirely for the edification of others.
Let us protect our brothers and sisters by choosing paths that lead everyone—not just the "strong"—closer to the Kingdom.
