Have you ever had a strong gut feeling, a sudden urge, or an "impression" in your heart and wondered, Is this actually God telling me to do something, or is it just my own brain making things up?

Let’s be honest: our own hearts can mess with us. As Jeremiah 17:9 points out, the human heart can be incredibly deceitful. It is shockingly easy to disguise our own selfish desires, ego, or anxieties as "God's will."

So, how do we cut through the noise and figure out what is actually true? The answer lies in looking at how God operates within Himself. By understanding the relationship between the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, we unlock the ultimate grid for spiritual discernment.

The Divine Game of "Spotlight"

At first glance, some of Jesus' statements in the Gospels can seem a bit puzzling. In John 5:41, He says, "I receive not honour from men." Later, in John 8:54, He adds, "If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me."

The Pharisees tried to use human logic to call Him out on this, essentially accusing Him of just bragging about Himself. But they missed the point entirely because they didn't understand how God operates.

Within the Trinity, there is a beautiful, humble rhythm. Jesus doesn’t push His own ego or seek self-honour. Instead:

  • The Father glorifies and honours the Son.

  • The Son submits to and glorifies the Father.

  • The Holy Spirit shifts the focus entirely. As Jesus explains in John 16:13-14, the Spirit of truth "shall not speak of himself... He shall glorify me."

Think of it like a perfectly synchronized echo. The Father points to the Son. The Son points to the Father. The Holy Spirit shines the spotlight right back on Jesus. They are totally distinct, but they never go rogue or act independently. They echo each other perfectly.

The Foolproof Grid for Discernment

Because of this perfect unity, God has given us a foolproof way to test our thoughts on a random Tuesday when we are trying to make tough life decisions.

The golden rule of discernment is simple: God never contradicts Himself.

As 1 Corinthians 14:33 reminds us, "God is not the author of confusion, but of peace." If the Holy Spirit is genuinely prompting or warning you about something, those thoughts will always align with the words of Jesus, and Jesus' words always align with the Father's will.

If you get a strong feeling to do something, but it flatters your ego, pushes you toward self-honour, or goes against what the Bible plainly says... it is not the Holy Spirit. Period. The Spirit never promotes self-glory, and He never contradicts the Word He inspired.

The 3-Step Filter Test

The next time you are trying to figure out if a thought or direction is from God or just from your own head, run it through these three quick tests based on who God is:

1. The Glory Test

Does this bring glory to Jesus, or am I just trying to honor myself? If the impression you are feeling centers around building your own empire, feeding your pride, or demanding your own way, it fails the test of the Holy Spirit's character.

2. The Alignment Test

Does it line up perfectly with the Bible? Isaiah 8:20 gives us a strict standard: "To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them." God will never tell you to do something in your private life that contradicts what He has already written in His Word. If it goes against Scripture, turn it off.

3. The Peace Test

Does it bring the peace and fruit of the Spirit, or is it causing chaos and confusion? Anxiety, frantic rushing, and chaos are hallmarks of our own human emotions or outside pressures. God’s guidance may challenge you, but it will ultimately anchor you in His peace.

Bottom Line

God’s Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. When you stop relying on fickle emotions and start aligning your thoughts with His clear, unchanging character, the confusion disappears. Listen for the Divine Echo—if it sounds like Jesus, it's a voice you can trust.

What are you trying to discern in your life right now? Try running it through these three tests and see how the clarity shifts.
