The Divine Rinse: Beholding Jesus

Have you ever felt like your spiritual life is a constant cycle of trying not to fail, only to fall again at the same hurdle?

The Law is often described as a mirror. As 2 Corinthians 3 suggests, the Law has a glory, but it is a "ministry of condemnation." It is perfect for showing you where the dirt is, but it was never designed to wash your face. It helps us see our need, but it lacks the power to change our nature. To find true transformation, we must look away from the mirror, behold Jesus, and lean into The Holy Spirit at work in us.

1. The City of Refuge: Dealing with the Debt

In the Old Testament, a person fleeing for their life could find safety in a "City of Refuge." When we realize our sin isn't just a mistake, but something rooted in an "evil heart," the debt feels impossible to pay.

Jesus is that City. He satisfied the "life for a life" requirement with His own blood. He is the sanctuary where your past and your guilt cannot reach you. This is where the "deep clean" begins—the Blood of Christ scours the conscience (katharizó) of evil and silences the voice that tells you sin is your only option.

2. The Four Steps of Spirit-Led Change

Transformation isn't about white-knuckling your way to holiness; it’s a cooperative journey with the Spirit of God.

  • Step 1: Realization. The Law does its job—you realize you’ve done wrong.

  • Step 2: Confession. You agree with God about that sin, bringing it into the light of His grace.

  • Step 3: A New Affection. The Spirit leads you to love something better. You begin to fall in love with the way of Jesus and the beauty of righteousness.

  • Step 4: The Work of the Spirit. You step back and let the Holy Spirit do the heavy lifting of changing your desires.

3. The "Little by Little" Transformation

We often want an overnight miracle, but the Bible describes a patient process. In 2 Corinthians 3:18, Paul says we are being changed into His image "from glory to glory"—or from one degree of glory to the next.

In the Old Testament, God promised to drive out the enemies of Israel "little by little" (Exodus 23:30), and He does the same with the "enemies" in our hearts.

Be patient with His work. The "Last Step" (the actual change in behavior) often takes the most time. If you don't see a total overhaul today, don't despair. As the love of Christ begins to percolate in you, trust that the Spirit is doing something beneath the surface.

4. Beholding and Becoming

The secret isn't staring at your sins; it’s staring at your Savior.

"But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord."2 Corinthians 3:18

While you wait on Him, simply behold His face. Love Jesus and love His way. As you keep your eyes on Him, the Holy Spirit—the Divine Architect—is busy remodeling your soul. You aren't just "doing better"; you are being made new by the only Power capable of doing it.

Putting it into Practice

When the old "thief thoughts" or patterns of anger return:

  1. Acknowledge: "Spirit, I see this wrong in me. I confess it."

  2. Behold: "Lord, I love Your way of honesty and peace more than this sin."

  3. Apply the Blood: "Lord, I apply the blood of Jesus Christ to my mind and believe it cleanses my conscience.

  4. Wait: "I trust You are changing me little by little. I lean into Your work today."

You Are Being Made New

If you stumble, remember Psalm 37:24: Though you fall, you shall not be utterly cast down, for the Lord upholds you. He who began the good work in you is faithful to finish it. He will "subdued" your iniquities—treading them underfoot—and cast them into the depths of the sea.

Take a breath. You aren't under the burden of the Law; you are under the power of Grace.
