The Hidden Flex: Why the "Shut Door" is Your Greatest Power Move

Most of the time when people talk about supporting missions or helping the church, they’re talking about the checkbook. If you’re a guy my age, that usually makes you feel like a spectator. You might look at your life and think you have zero to offer the body of Christ because you aren't exactly bankrolling global projects.

But there is a Kingdom Economy that works differently than the world. There’s a hidden currency that carries just as much weight as silver or gold.

It’s prayer.

The Power of the Shut Door

We often treat prayer like a last resort or a polite "good luck" wish. But the Apostle Paul didn't see it that way. He was a heavy hitter for the Gospel, yet he was constantly asking for backup: "Brethren, pray for us" (1 Thessalonians 5:25).

But how do we actually do that? Jesus gave us the blueprint:

"But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly." (Matthew 6:6)

This "shut door" isn't just about blocking out noise or your annoying siblings. It’s about shutting out the need for man’s approval. It’s about getting real with God when nobody is watching. Think about it: if Jesus—the Son of God—needed to wake up "a great while before day" to find a solitary place to pray, how much more do we need that?

Hidden Roots, Open Rewards

Think of ministry like a massive tree. The branches and fruit are what everyone sees—that’s the public success. But the hidden roots reaching deep into the soil? That’s the secret prayer life. Without the roots in the dark, the tree dies in the light.

We see this "Shut Door" principle all through the Word when things got impossible:

  • Tabitha was dead: Peter didn't put on a show. He put everyone out of the room, shut the door, knelt in the silence, and prayed. The "open reward" was her coming back to life.

  • The Shunammite woman’s son: Elisha didn't try to heal him in front of a crowd. He went in, "shut the door upon them twain, and prayed unto the Lord" (2 Kings 4:33).

Elisha knew some battles can’t be won in a crowd. He shut the door to exclude doubt and the flesh so he could be alone with the Giver of Life.

No One is Broke in This Economy

You might think you have nothing to give, but prayer is the one gift that literally everyone has. Your "closet" might be a quiet room, a morning walk, or even sitting in a parked car before you head into school.

When we ask the brethren to "pray for us," we aren't asking for a religious performance. We’re asking you to move the hand of God in secret on our behalf.

The Challenge: What "door" do you need to shut today? Is it the door of social media? The door of worrying about what people think? Or just the door of your busy schedule?

The world rewards the noise, but the Kingdom is moved in the secret places. Don't just pray for us—pray with us in that hidden room. That’s where the real victory is won.

Stay grounded. ✌️
