The Praise of Men vs. The Praise of God
Have you ever held back from doing the right thing because you were worried about how people would react? If we are being completely honest, most of us have been there. The desire for human approval is a powerful force, but it can often become a roadblock to living out our faith authentically.
This week, we are diving into a powerful truth found in John 5:41, where Jesus simply states:
"I receive not honor from men."
While Jesus walked this out perfectly during His time on earth, this standard isn't just for Him—it is just as applicable to us as His followers today.
The Danger of Seeking Human Approval
It is easy to look at figures in the Bible and wonder how they missed what was right in front of them. Take the chief rulers in John chapter 12, for example. The Scripture notes that many of them actually believed in Jesus. Yet, they refused to confess Him openly.
Why? Because they were terrified of the Pharisees and didn't want to be kicked out of the synagogue. John 12:43 cuts straight to the heart of the issue:
"For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God."
Before we judge them too harshly, we have to look in the mirror. We face that exact same pressure today. Whether it comes from our families, our workplaces, or our social circles, there is a constant, subtle pressure to hide our faith, compromise our values, or hold back from living a godly life just to fit in.
You Can’t Serve Two Masters
As servants of Christ, we are called to a different standard. The Apostle Paul understood the pull of people-pleasing, but he drew a clear line in the sand in Galatians 1:10:
"For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ."
Paul knew that you cannot serve two masters. He and the other apostles consistently chose divine assignment over human approval. In 1 Thessalonians 2:6, Paul reminded the church that they didn't look for glory from men—not from them, and not from anyone else.
Seeking our own status or validation is ultimately empty. Proverbs 25:27 puts it perfectly: "It is not good to eat much honey: so for men to search their own glory is not glory." Just like eating too much sugar makes you feel sick, chasing self-glory leaves you entirely empty.
Shifting Your Perspective
Living for the applause of people who are temporary will always leave you shortchanged. The breakthrough happens when you make a shift in perspective: Stop living for the applause of people, and start living for the approval of the God who is eternal.
Your Challenge for the Week
Let's bring this truth into everyday life. Here is your call to action for the week ahead:
Identify: Pinpoint one specific area in your life right now where the fear of what others think is holding you back from obeying God.
Pray: Bring that specific fear to God and ask Him for the courage to stand firm.
Act: Take one bold step today to choose God’s praise over man’s approval.
When we shift our focus from earthly applause to eternal approval, we find the true freedom we were always meant to walk in. Have a blessed week, and keep choosing Him!
