The Unseen Cut: Circumcision Made Without Hands

When we hear the word "circumcision," our minds usually go straight to the Old Testament or a physical medical procedure. But there is a deeper, spiritual meaning that is essential for every believer today. If we ignore this "unseen cut," we run the risk of quenching the Holy Spirit in our lives.

The truth is, while we are saved by grace exactly as we are—messy, sinful, and ungodly—God loves us too much to leave us that way. Just as Abraham was called by God before he was circumcised, we are called while we are still in our sins. However, Abraham was given the sign of circumcision to confirm that he believed unto righteousness. We are given the circumcision of the heart as a sign that we believe. What does that look like?

It is the Spirit Who Does the Cutting

A common mistake is thinking we have to "fix ourselves" or perform the surgery on our own hearts. If we try to cut off our own sins through sheer willpower, we only end up frustrated. This is a "circumcision made without hands." It is the Holy Spirit who performs the work; our role is to yield, seek, and persist.

Colossians 2:11 "In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:"

The Process of Change

God typically moves us through a specific process (seen in Matthew 7:7-12) to bring about this transformation:

  • ASK: The First Cut (Desire): It begins when the Spirit gives us a new longing. We start to feel a holy dissatisfaction with our old habits and a genuine desire to be changed. This is the first "cut" to the heart.

  • SEEK: The Diligent Search (Wisdom): Once we want to change, we must seek the wisdom to do so. This isn't passive; it’s an active hunt for God's truth. (Proverbs 2)

  • KNOCK: The Breakthrough (Keep Asking): We eventually reach a point where we realize only God can finalize the change. We ask, seek, and knock until the door of our old habits is finally shut and a new door is opened.

Proverbs 2:3-5 "Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God."

This process can take a week, months or years. Don't complicate the simplicity of your faith in Christ Jesus. Don't fret that you must not be saved because you don't get delivered from a sin instantly. Keep asking, keep seeking and keep knocking.

The Cost of Clinging to the Flesh

On the other hand, Jesus spoke in very serious terms about the necessity of this spiritual removal. He suggested it is better to lose a hand or an eye than to let those things lead you to destruction. While this isn't a command to harm your body, it is a call for radical surrender.

"Cutting off a hand" might look like leaving a job that forces you to be dishonest or walking away from a living situation that keeps you in sin. It could look like throwing away movies, deleting playlists or turning off a show. Listen to the Holy Spirit. Is He calling you to leave? Has He given you a way of escape? Take it. If not, be patient with the Spirit to show you a way out.

Having No Confidence in the Flesh

Ultimately, this process changes where we put our trust. We have no confidence in the flesh but in God who is able to transform us.

Philippians 3:3 "For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh."

If you feel the "pull" of the Holy Spirit asking you to let go of an old habit, a toxic relationship, or a sinful lifestyle, don't resist. It might be painful at the moment, but it is the path to abundant life. Remember, God is faithful to finish the good work He started in you. Let’s not quench the Spirit; let's embrace the change He wants to make.

Trusting Your Good Father

When we refuse this "cut"—when we insist on keeping the sin—we "vex" or "quench" the Spirit. But remember, God isn't trying to take things away to hurt you. He is a Good Father. If you ask Him for freedom and the wisdom to change, He isn't going to ignore you.

Matthew 7:7-8, 11 "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened... If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?"

Be patient with the process. Ask for the desire to change. Seek the wisdom to get free and don't fret. Keep knocking. God is a faithful Father who will give you the good gift you've asked for. Let's not quench the Spirit; let's trust Him to finish the work He started.
